English abstract

This book constitutes an analysis and evaluation of the oldest accounts of the life of the Prophet Muhammad - collected and spread at the end of the 1st/7th century by Urwa ibn al-Zubayr. It shows how to identify authentic traditions and separate them from later additions.
Due to the age of the material and the close relation of Urwa to some of the main characters around Muhammad, his traditions likely reflect the general historical outline correctly. The book thus shows in an exemplary manner how an authentic kernel in the traditions on the Prophet Muhammad can be uncovered.
