Numerical modelling and in-vitro studies of ultrasound signal loss across fractures in cortical bone mimics
Significance of output:
There are some 16,000 fractures of the tibia in the UK per annum; these have a high incidence of delayed union and non-union with associated time and financial costs. The attenuation of ultrasound across a fracture provides a potential technique for monitoring the fracture healing process. This work describes a numerical study of propagation across a fracture in various stages of healing as part of a programme funded by Action Research. The modelling was supported by experimental measurements that showed how the transmission through the fracture region increased through the healing process. A collaborative project with the University of Bath.
