Significance of output:

This paper is part of a series developing an advanced engineering model for sound radiation from jet exhausts that has since been adopted by industry (Rolls-Royce: andrew.j.kempton@rolls-royce.com, Airbus: vincent.blandeau@airbus.com). It provides a fast method to identify optimal acoustic treatments that can minimise sound radiation from aircraft engines and reduce the impact on residents near airports. For the first time complex features observed in the acoustic near field of the jet have been explained and their influence on the model accuracy assessed.
