Exploring the self through photography: activities for use in group work

Craig’s research focuses on the potential of photography as both a therapeutic modality and a method to increase understanding of the experiences of older people living in care. The initial work forming the basis of this single authored book was funded through a grant from the College of Occupational Therapists and in 2010 Craig received a further award, the ROMPA Quality of Life Award, to extend the research.

Dissemintation of the book led to invited presentations and workshops including the 2010 International Society for Gerontotechnology World Congress in Vancouver and the All Wales Psychotherapy Conference: Image and identity. Invited keynotes to share the research have included the 5th International Ageing and Spirituality Conference in Edinburgh and the European Network of Occupational Therapists in Higher Education in Lithuania. More recently, interest in this research has grown and led to the publication being translated into German.

Following the delivery of a paper, 'Every Picture Tells a Story', on the subject at the first European Design4Health Conference (2011), Craig was commissioned to write a chapter about the developed methodology by a commissioning editor of Sage. This chapter, ‘Photography in care homes: methods for a revealing practice’, forms part of the SAGE reference project: SAGE cases in methodology.
