Additional information

This paper is based on the same extensive programme of work as that cited in Output 1. In this case, the aim was to compare a range of nanocomposite ceramic/metal coatings in terms of antimicrobial effectiveness and tribological properties The coatings, deposited by pulsed magnetron sputtering, comprised ceramic matrices of CrN, ZrN and TiN with copper or silver nanoparticles at the grain boundaries of the matrix. It was found that the metal nanoparticles acted as solid lubricants and lowered the friction in unlubricated tests and the different coatings had significant antimicrobial properties against different types of microbes.
