<2>Output of the EU FP7 BACTOCOM project (FP7-ICT-2009-4 248919, coordinated by MMU). First ever description of how bacterial conjugation (exchange of genetic information via cell-cell contact) may be used as a communication scheme for distributed synthetic biology. This work forms the basis of the new FP7 PLASWIRES project (2013-2016, FP7-ICT-2013-9.6, #612146, 2M euros), which will use conjugation to engineer multicellular circuits with potential applications in biomedicine and biotechnology. Extensive simulation work confirms the in-principle viability of the idea, which will now be tested in the laboratory.
