Additional information

This paper provides more accurately, model geometric considerations, which have resulted in an increased interest within the UK manufacturing strategy as automated manufacturing processes are developed. The paper is a result of several PhD activities and a CAST award from Rolls-Royce leading to successful £103k POC funding; DSTL funding and a large Bombardier composites-skills training grant (£800k). Axis Composites was formed following on from this work, focusing on the commercial development of 3D weaving. ECRE have been the only research institute within Europe to design and manufacture these complex structures which are ultimately being utilized for next-generation aircraft engines.
