Drawing - in and outside - writing
This artist’s book and cahier is the result of the research project ‘Writing - in and outside - Drawing’ between four artists supported by a €25,000 OPAK grant from K.U. Leuven, association of Flemish Universities. Through practice-based research the project sought to examine the ways in which thinking and writing can become fused in the creative act of drawing. A range of research methods were employed, that included postal correspondence, residencies and an exhibition, as well as the collaboration on the artist’s book and a cahier.
The cahier also includes documentation of the exhibition, In - and outside - Writing, held at Voorkamer in Lier, Belgium in 2011, which included individual curations by the four lead artists as well as a survey exhibition or artists working the field and featured work by 81 international artists.
Within the project as a whole my own research methods revolved around re-drawing images and re-reading narratives, exploring text and image as sites of return. The artists' book is published in the UK by Research group for Artists Publications and my chapter for this has been created as a primarily visual response to the project. The cahier, published by OPAK, compliments this by including an essay that outlines my research findings.
The output is presented via portfolio, which should be viewed in order to gain a proper understanding of the research.
