I initiated this long-term programme with the lead author. This paper is the first time that flare events have been conclusively identified with specific regions of a jet, away from the central black hole, as predicted by Marscher & Gear in 1985. I contributed significantly to the interpretation and to the wording of the text, in particular the comparison to models in the main text and supplementary information. The author order is by institution, according to consortium policy.
