Additional information

This paper reported a study of compressor bleed slots for improving turbocharger flow range. Although bleed slots have been used for some time, the complex flow physics were not understood and the system had not been optimised. Flow range is of utmost importance to achieve drivability from aggressively down-sized, highly boosted engines. The work reported in this paper resulted in Cummins Turbo Technologies (Nick.K.Sharp) directly funding further work at the university in this area. This paper received the 2010 Outstanding Paper Award from the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, and was presented by invitation at the HKIE Presidential Dinner.
