An improved spinning lens test to determine the stiffness of the human lens.
The system described in the paper makes use of entirely new finite element inverse analysis procedure to infer values of lens shear modulus from images collected during the experiment. This test protocol has attracted the interest of an ophthalmic research group at the University of Rostock, Germany (http://www.augenklinik.uni-rostock.de/index.htm, contact details available). As a consequence, Oxford was awarded a research contract (2010) to design and build an enhanced version of this test equipment for the Rostock group. This rig is currently being used in Rostock to study potential treatments for presbyopia (age-related loss of accommodation amplitude).
