Double-weighted statement

Terra Incognita is an exceptionally wide-ranging monograph, both in terms of its chronological scope (classical Greek through to the eighteenth-century), and in terms of its cross-disciplinary methodology. It examines a considerable body of unpublished material - including maps, scientific treatises, poetry, and commentaries on classical literature - which had to be consulted in manuscript form over an extended period of ten years at the Vatican Library, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich, and the Newberry Library in Chicago, in several languages (primarily Latin, but also Old and Middle English, French, German, and Italian).
