Double-weighted statement

This is a scholarly edition of fourteen sermons by Donne, preached at the court of Charles I. It presents newly edited texts (total c. 130,000 words), based on collation of multiple witnesses and on multiple exemplars of individual copy-texts and on the analysis of variants, recorded in the textual notes. A substantial (c. 20,000 words) introduction considers the contexts of the homiletic tradition and doctrinal, social, and political developments, as well as analyzing Donne’s prose style. Headnotes and commentaries (c. 155,000 words) describe the textual state of each sermon, and supply further contextual and interpretative materials.
