Society Dancing: Fashionable Bodies in England, 1870-1920

This monograph presents data investigated over ten years from at least twelve archives/libraries located in London, Cambridge, Brighton, Oxford and New York. The overall argument derives from the collation and detailed analysis of primary source materials relating to the fifty year span: over forty dance manuals (scrutinised in all traceable editions in hard copy), verbal and graphic dance notations, musical scores, newspapers, journals, autobiographies, fiction, street directories, census returns, wills, cartoons, paintings and photographs. Most of the examination covering over twenty press titles and genealogical records was conducted prior to digitised online access.
