Additional information

This paper describes the application of an enhanced spectroscopic analytical technology developed in our Analytical Instrumentation, Measurement and Control Engineering team. The work utilised spectral pre-processing techniques and multivariate statistical models to allow improvements in the age estimation of blood stains under controlled conditions and resulted in the most accurate age determination of blood stains reported at that time. The methodology developed in this work was cited for improving the accuracy of results later reported by Professor Maurice Aalders group at Amsterdam University, Edelman et al. (Forensic Sci Int. 2012 11/30;223(1–3):72-7) (contact m.c.aalders@amc.uva.nl) .
