The paper applied state-of-the-art statistical modelling for answering substantive research questions in education, during the prestigious Research Councils UK (RCUK) Academic Fellowship 2007-12. This article is based on research funded by the ESRC. It was presented as an invited paper in the SIG Keynote Symposium (Emotion and Motivation) at the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI) Biennial Conference, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, 22-25/08/2009.
