Double-weighted statement

Welsh Gothic merits ‘doubling’ for the breadth of its primary research and its status as the first monograph to establish the existence of a Welsh Gothic genre. It explores the work of c.120 writers, published from 1780 to the present day, few of whom (with the exception of Arthur Machen) are today in the public domain. Its first four chapters discuss the characteristic patterns of Welsh Gothic writing from 1780-1997, while the second part focuses on figures such as the sin-eater who enter literature from Welsh folklore. An epilogue examining post-devolution Welsh Gothic brings the study up to date.
