Additional information
The chapter addresses the problem of appraising innovation, in the context of Doctorates in Art practice. It draws on Philosophical aesthetics, linguistics and pedagogics to attempt to answer epistemological and ontological questions about such Doctorates. The chapter uses translation theory, specifically through the work of Della Volpe and Roman Jacobson, Idealist aesthetics (Kant and Wordsworth) and its interpreters (Cohen et al.). It uses Creativity theory (Bohm, Carroll) to ask how art produces meaning and/or knowledge and how artworks can be appraised?
