Additional information

This book explores and analyses the origins, development and diffusion of symbols, motifs, and patterns in the decorative arts, design and architecture across a selection of (predominantly non-European) cultures and historical periods. The book develops the debate on how geometric structure has been used to encode meaning in various cultural settings, and also how effective methodologies, based on consideration of underlying geometrical structures, can be used to analyse, classify and compare data from different historical and cultural contexts. The book draws on data collected by Hann during various field trips over the past ten years.
