Recognition, differentiation and classification of regular repeating patterns in textiles
This book chapter presents a comprehensive appraisal of the structural geometry associated with regularly repeating patterns, and draws much on concepts and principles originating in the discipline of crystallography. An explanation is given of the outcome and results of various research projects associated with the principal author over the past decade. Further to this, recent fresh approaches and innovative illustrative materials are introduced by the co-author. The essence is the presentation of a means for classifying two-dimensional designs (in this instance, comprised of motifs, border patterns and over-all patterns) using novel means and notations derived from the discipline of crystallography.
