A Fabry-Perot fibre-optic ultrasonic hydrophone for the simultaneous measurement of temperature and acoustic pressure
This paper describes a novel fibre-optic hydrophone for characterising medical and industrial ultrasound fields. This instrument has excited significant interest on account of its unique ability to make simultaneous measurements of acoustic pressure and temperature. A key application is the measurement of the acoustic fields produced in high intensity focussed ultrasound cancer therapy for optimising treatment parameters. The concept has since been commercially exploited by a UK SME. With more than 20 units sold in seven countries, it is currently the ultrasonic fibre optic hydrophone market leader and is beginning to displace existing piezoelectric equivalents in high frequency ultrasound metrology.
