This research stemmed from Ling’s exploration into the cross–cultural contexts of calligraphy. Ling asks the question of what aspects of different cultural traditions (particularly from East Asia) can be applied to Western calligraphy? Using a philosophical methodology which stems from the tacit and intuitive approaches to calligraphy inspired by the first canon of painting “Chi Yun Shen Tung” (Rhythmic Vitality) by the Chinese artist Hiseh Ho (AD 479-502), Ling shows that influences from East Asian calligraphy could be applied to Western calligraphy and in turn, this approach potentially would also be feasible with other cultures such as the Indian or Islamic traditions. Based on his findings, Ling wrote a peer-reviewed article for the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society’s ‘Edge Journal’ (pp.18-21, May 2010), which was later translated into Finnish for the calligraphy journal ‘Sulkanen’ published by Kalligrafia in Finalnd (November 2012). Ling also disseminated his findings at The Calligraphy Symposium at the University of Kankaanpaa in Finland (June 2012).
