Additional information

Majority of materials have positive compressibility; however there exist a few materials that exhibit negative compressibility, meaning that they expand in one or two directions when they are subjected to a confining pressure. This property appears to be rare and only a few materials are known to exhibit such behaviour. This paper proposes a robust methodology to design materials with negative linear compressibility. The proposed methodology provides a wide range of structures each with a different value of negative compressibility and can also be used to tailor new materials with prescribed material behaviour.
