Monograph is the result of fourteen years' sustained research on the complex relationships between religion, nation, and gender. It began as a PhD thesis, 'Rethinking the Private, 1750-1789', AHRC-funded and supported by a Huntington Library Fellowship. The further development of the core themes of Protestantism, patriotism, and femininity necessitated extensive archival research alongside the exploration of print material available on ECCO and EEBO. Monograph draws on thousands of letters, journals and other MS materials from the holdings of many university and theological libraries. Visual culture is also key to the book, which is 383 pages long and contains 36 illustrations.
