English abstract
The article examines the early work of Renoir and ways in which his practices were imbricated within a set of traditional artisanal working methods dating back to the turn of the eighteenth century and explicable in terms of the democratization of the production and consumption of art following the French Revolution. The article was included as one of a series of essays on Renoir’s working methods and their links to traditional forms of nineteenth century visual culture undertaken for an exhibition at the Complesso Vittoriano, Rome in 2008, 'Renoir. La rinascita del sentimento classico'.
