An analytical model based on radiative heating for the determination of safety distances for wildland fires
This paper presented a novel model for predicting the radiative flux exposure of wildland fire fighters, through research funded by CNRS (CPER Corsica, €400k). It has improved existing approaches through multi-dimensional spatial modelling of the fire-front. The paper led to a further project (EU MARITTIMO PROTERINA-C, €500k) which applied the research to fire-fighting planning by defining safe working distances. The Forest Service of South-Corsica (Michel Costa, Director, email available) is currently evaluating this model for improving fuel-break design. It stimulated further research on radiative models (DoI:10.1016/j.ijheatmasstransfer.2012.09.065).
