Facebook or Fakebook? : The effects of simulated mobile applications on simulated mobile networks

<05>Many ubiquitous computing systems are tested using user studies, where participants pretend that they are using future applications that do not yet exist. We evaluate the impact of using such simulated systems by conducting a user study with real and simulated applications. Understanding this is crucial for research into building effective future systems. We construct privacy models based on real user behaviour which can be used elsewhere. Some of this work first appeared in an international workshop; we were invited to submit an extended journal version, but declined and chose to submit to this different, but more relevant, journal instead.
