Ethical tensions emerging from the application of the collective intelligence concept in academic social networking.

This chapter, one of two by the author in a major academic text, provides a novel analysis of the shifting landscape of ‘collective intelligence’ that is formulated within third wave technology such as that represented by all forms of social media dependent on the World Wide Web. The originality of the work is framed within the discussion of the changing of the traditional hierarchical “rules” associated with academic dialogue encapsulated within such new technologies. The chapter argues that this reframing of traditional hierarchies brings forth ethical dilemmas and questions related to privacy, and ownership and control of net-generated data, ideas, and information. This reframing of the field of study is interesting as it focuses a new lens on extant issues so revealing the implications of social media and their use in learning and teaching in higher education.
