RIP+MIX : developing and evaluating a new design method in which the designer becomes a DJ

This paper reports and reflects on a collaborative research project between T-Labs, Deutsche Telekom, Berlin and a commissioned design research team at the University of Dundee. The research developed and tested the Case Transfer method in a ‘real-life’ design context: the design of information and communication products and services for older people. It differs from a conventional user-centred design approach by focussing on design knowledge already embedded in existing artefacts as sources of new projections (e.g. ideation). The RIP+MIX method has resulted in creative processes, insights and outcomes that are effective, productive, culturally relevant, and offer considerable scope for further development and application. This piece of original research has been applied and disseminated in a number of political, social and economic settings. The users and beneficiaries of this research have been wide-ranging and include design researchers and practitioners, community agencies, healthcare practitioners and government policy makers.
