Additional information

These professional development materials draw on two ESRC projects (see pp.v-vi): “Urban Classroom Culture & Interaction”, 2005-2008 (Identities & Social Action Programme) (= UCCI:1); “Urban Classroom Culture & Interaction 2: From Research to Professional Practice” 2009-2011 (Follow-on Funding) (= UCCI:2). The 4 focal interactional episodes and their contextualisation draw on UCCI:1’s ethnographic & radio-mic data-collection. The pedagogic method and the substantive issues that the materials address were developed and refined through:

• 7 x 2-2½ hours workshops focused on interactional data with 39 experienced urban secondary school-teachers (all audio-recorded & transcribed with NVivo), supplemented with a brief questionnaire (UCCI:1, 2007)

• a series of seminars with 39 experienced urban secondary teachers – 3 sessions each with two groups (15hrs), and 9 hours with 2 MA groups (all audio-recorded & NVivo transcribed; UCCI:2, 2009-10)

• post-seminar written comments from each UCCI:2 participant, and conversational interviews with three of the most experienced (1½-2 hours each – all recorded & NVivo transcribed; UCCI:2).

In all, the PD materials draw on >45hrs of recordings with 78 urban teachers whose combined professional experience totals 973 years.
