<6>Partially funded by grants from the UK MOD Defence Technology Centres and Advantage West Midlands (DTC: Practical Exploitation of Autonomy – Location Awareness, IF047: AWM: Science City, Remote Sensing, BG/IN7054H). Map generation is essentially a problem of interpolation between points, and we present a novel wireless sensor network (WSN)-based method, which uses the Shepard interpolation method. Importantly, this method deals with the special characteristics of WSNs. Empirical analysis shows that the proposed service is accurate, flexible and efficient. The work was studied in simulation on thermal diffusion and flood management applications, and was also implemented on real hardware for soil monitoring.
