<17>Presents a new approach to localised information extraction - key to the success of any Wireless Sensor Network application - using the Watershed algorithm. We propose a reformulation of this algorithm that is fully asynchronous, whereby nodes can compute their local data in parallel and independently from one another. This setting minimises the amount of communication and computation needed to answer a query. The work was thoroughly evaluated in simulation using real thermal data. A short version of this article won the best paper award at the International Conference on Next Generation Wired/Wireless Networking 2011.
