Additional information

This paper reports an investigation into losses due to inter-bar currents in induction machines. Calorimetric loss measurements were used to show how changes to the manufacturing process reduced inter-bar currents to give an identifiable reduction in rotor losses. However, starting torque was also reduced. The work has informed production processes for US motor manufacturer AO Smith (which employed coauthor Ionel), and contributed to further research on mechanisms to reduce stray loss (see Stening's doctoral thesis published as ISBN 978-91-7501-682-5).
