Additional information

Monitoring and control the microstructure of steel on-line during hot processing is a priority for the steel industry as critical steels (especially dual and multi-phase) are demanded by users, e.g. automobile manufacturers for vehicle lightweighting. This was the first successful industrial installation of multi-frequency electromagnetic techniques pioneered by Peyton's team. Systems have been deployed on hot strip mills at Ijmuiden and Port Talbot and are subject to granted patents (GB2481482B, GB2490393B). The team is involved in EPSRC (EP/K027700/1), industrial (Siemens Metal Technologies, contact details available), EU (RFSR-CT-2013-00031) projects valued >£4M to help further develop and deploy this technology.
