Additional information

This EPSRC-funded work provided the theory for an open-access software package for fitting stimulus-response data in a model-free (non-parametric) way. The idea was for data to drive the model, rather than the user guessing. This specialist journal was chosen to reach the largest number of likely users of the software. Several groups are already using it, e.g. in cochlear implants (DOI: 10.1121/1.3672684), in lesion detection in multiple sclerosis (DOI: 10.1117/12.877590), and in measuring temporal integration in trained musicians (DOI: 10.1073/pnas.1115267108). The postdoc on the project was subsequently appointed Lecturer in Statistics at Liverpool University (contact details available).
