This paper presents a class of extremely wide band planar antennas, the Octagonal Rings Array (ORA), which has been patented by the authors (published as WO2010/112857 ). ORA is undergoing development for commercial exploitation including for next generation communications (contact CEO Sarantel Ltd, or UMIP Ltd; contact details for both available). Based on this paper, ORA is being further developed by the multi-national Square Kilometre Array radio telescope consortium (www.skatelescope.org, contact details available) . This paper also laid the foundations for work in China on ORA (doi:10.2528/PIER11121312 ).
