Additional information

In 'more-electric ships', replacing mechanical couplings with an electrical propulsion drive offers potential energy savings for ships from cruise-liners to patrol boats. But the resulting electrical system is complex , leading to teething problems, owing to unfamiliarity with the technologies. This paper on the propulsion drives formed part of a collaborative multi-university EPSRC-funded project, supported by Lloyds Register, Rolls-Royce and other companies, that built simulation models of the complete electrical propulsion system. The models were presented at Lloyds Register Technical Seminar and the approach is promoted by the MOD as vital for future ship development (contact details available).
