Additional information

This publication examines the effective strain in nanoscale silicon inclusions in oxide. The technological application of the material is in light emission from silicon whose optical properties are dominated by surface effects as indicated in the article. The work has been used by (amongst others) a group at the University of Illinois to study sidewall roughness in silicon nanostructures (DOI: 10.1063/1.4767456) and a group at the national renewable energy labs in Colorado to study the detrimental effects of such strains when used in the active region of photovoltaic cells (DOI: 10.1002/adfm.201200572).
