This paper has provided an increased understanding in the further development of advanced 3D woven composites through novel manufacture and test methods collaborating with industry (TSB programmes – 3DSIMCOMS/Principle Investigator and subsequent) and specifically with BAE systems (author Townsend). Developing an understanding of appropriate test methods specifically for through thickness properties is paramount for continuing work in this field including multi-axial reinforcements with Bombardier (SpaRC LLP) and through Axis Composites (GE Aviation – composite butt strap design, manufacture and testing). Again this has led to the BIS-Bombardier-INI funded NIACE plus INI Competence Center.
