Corrosion protection performance of novel hybrid polyaniline/sol-gel coatings on an aluminium 2024 alloy in neutral, alkaline and acidic solutions
Despite their high corrosion vulnerability, light-weight high-stress aluminium 2024 alloys are the main structural materials used by the aircraft industry. However, due to EU legislation changes scheduled for the end of 2015, there is an urgent requirement to find a replacement for the toxic Cr(VI)-based anti-corrosion coatings currently used within the aero sector. This paper describes a novel sol-gel technology that is the subject of two patent pending families by SHU (EP2526219, GB2477117, US2013029134, GB2499847, WO2013128189), which can provide the required eco-friendly corrosion protection of Al 2024 alloys. SHU is working with three manufacturers in the validation of coatings based on this, Socomore SAS (France), Indestructible Paint Ltd (UK), Mankiewicz GmbH (Germany).
