Additional information

An outstanding problem of ionospheric data assimilation is how to effectively assimilate disparate data types whilst maintaining a physically realistic model. This paper demonstrates that a non-linear Kalman filter can provide an effective assimilation solution when both GPS and ionosonde data is used. The resulting model modifies the ionospheric slab thickness in order to match the integrated total electron content measurement from the GPS and the layer peak measurements from the ionosonde. This work was undertaken at QinetiQ as part of the UK Ministry of Defence ISTAR and Sensors Domain research programme.
