<21> An invited peer-reviewed article in the landmark 20th anniversary 'Weiser's Vision retrospective' edition of IEEE Pervasive, with Ramón Cáceres (AT&T). We reflect on barriers to large-scale deployment of Ubicomp systems, highlighting data and infrastructure manament challenges. We are the first to suggest utilising private cloud services to lower the management overhead and increase the privacy of personal ubiquitous data; and use of the Internet of Things to reduce the hardware burden of Ubicomp deployments. Cited as an exemplar of open challenges in Ubicomp by international researchers. Over 1,200 downloads from IEEE Explore (over 80 downloads/month) in 2012.
