This work was presented as part of the Förster International Lecture Series, which I organised in Cambridge in 2008 to commerate the 100th anniversary of Theodor Förster. As a result I was invited by the Royal Society to edit a special anniversary issue on Förster Resonance Energy Transfer in Royal Society Interface Focus (http://tinyurl.com/pbmz42m) and subsequently became a member of its permanent editorial board (contact Dr. Tim Holt). It led to an invitation also to organise a topical issue on FRET in ChemPhysChem (http://tinyurl.com/aq7p7r5).
