This paper addresses bio-implant surface engineering and the influential role of extracellular matrix proteins, which are critical factors in the development of medical implants. Using surface chemistry and topography to create a specific biomaterial micro-environment, we demonstrate induced proliferation, differentiation and mineralisation of bone cells in vitro, as a key enabling step for tissue engineering scaffold manufacture. Funded under the All-Ireland Functional Biomaterials R&D programme, this work has now attracted Proof of Concept commercialisation finance (InvestNI, PoC 319, 2013).
