Additional information

This paper identified the first evidence for episodes of climate warming on Mars during the Hesperian epoch, a time previously considered to be extremely cold and hyper-arid, from the presence of ancient lakes formed by melting of permafrost. The research was funded by a STFC Astronomy standard grant (grant ST/F003099/1) and a Royal Society-Leverhulme Trust Senior Research Fellowship to Gupta. Gupta gave invited talks at Royal Astronomy Society (12/12/08); Glasgow Univ. (2/10/09); ENS, Lyon, France (1/06/10). The paper attracted significant media interest (half-page feature in the Daily Telegraph (5/01/10); live interview on BBC News 24 TV (5/01/10)).
