Aerodynamic drag reduction of a simplified squareback vehicle using steady blowing
This paper addresses the need to reduce aerodynamic drag of road vehicles without compromising the styling. The influence of steady blowing, applied at the vehicle trailing edge, is investigated and demonstrates a net aerodynamic drag power reduction. The strength of the paper lies in the technical insight provided by the surface pressure and PIV measurements; these suggest that some of the drag reduction demonstrated could be realised using passive methods that would not normally be tried. This technical value was recognised by JLR who are now funding a two year research programme at Loughborough to investigate passive techniques.
