Additional information

Magnesium Stearate (Mg St) is used as a lubricant in tablet formulations to help get material through the process. However Mg St has a significant detrimental effect on tablet performance in-vivo and so minimising Mg St content is desirable. By spraying the Mg St only onto the surface that required lubrication, a significant reduction (100 fold) can be achieved while maintaining throughput levels. The work was funded in part by EPSRC (through EngD scheme) and Bristol Myers Squib who collaborated on the project. Further work is ongoing in optimisation of the spray system and full process chain.
