Double-weighted statement

This monograph is the first modern comprehensive study of Claudian's literary style in English. The original work was undertaken as a doctoral project, but the final output is based on substantial new work and revisions over the subsequent five years. As the work concerns Claudian's debt to Latin epic (a period of four hundred years), research involved a detailed knowledge of Claudian's poetry, a considerable body of other primary sources and the corresponding secondary literature. The study is based on close readings, which required detailed analysis and comparison of a large number of texts.
