Additional information

In this paper we report on developing silver impregnated implant suitable for orthopaedic use, which is effective in preventing biofilm formation. The incidence of peri-prosthetic infection is around 2% but in certain applications may be as high as 10%. It has been estimated that it may cost the NHS up to £70,000 to teat an infected patient. the development of an antibacterial coating to reduce biofilm formation is clinically and commercially important. We have patented this technology and two companies one that coats orthopaedic implants and one that manufactures implants are collaborating on a joint project using this invention.
