Impaction grafting with a bone-graft substitute in a sheep model of revision hip replacement
This study showed that impaction grafting using hydroxyapatite/allograft (90:10) in a sheep model of revision replacement, resulted in functional implants with bone growth present throughout the graft. Revision hip surgery costs the NHS £59 million a year and 25-50% of these implants will fail. Failure of the implant results in further bone loss, making the success of future implants less tenable. This paper is of high importance as it addresses this issue by investigating a method that attempts to regenerate bone in revision hip surgery. Results indicate that this material is a suitable alternative to allograft in revision surgery.
